Is Education Important?

by Shally A.

Recently, I have been reading about education in Nigeria and I discovered that 40% of children aged 6-11 have never attended primary school. It is so perturbing that lots of children do not have the privilege of education, which is an essential ingredient for development.

Another disturbing fact is that education does not seem to achieve its purpose in this part of the world. Education has been reduced to mere cramming and certificate craze

The goal of education is to stimulate the mind and harness talents of students to enable them solve communal problems. Education is suppose to open your mind to possibilities, to teach values, and enhance your creative ability.

Good education is the one of Nigeria's major problems. I am tempted to go on and on about the problem of education in Nigeria but my focus is not to analyze the problem, instead I want to share some quotes with you:

Seven sins of life: Politics without principle, Commerce without morality, Wealth without work, Education without character, Science without humanity. Pleasure without conscience, Worship without sacrifice.”
Mahatma Gandhi

"To educate a person in the mind but not in morals is to educate a menace to society.”
Theodore Roosevelt

“Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.”
C.S. Lewis

“Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.”
 Martin Luther King Jr.

Finally, what can we do to solve the problem of education in Nigeria:

* Enlighten people by writing, discussing and organizing seminars on education.

* Develop NGO'S focused on education or

* Join those educating students in different public schools. Find out about this remarkable organization here.
